Stretch Wrap & Shrink Film
Stretch wrap (also called stretch film or pallet wrap) is a highly elastic plastic film used to wrap around products on pallets to hold them securely during transport and storage. It is the most common unitizing method in the packaging industry.
Hand Stretch Wrap (70-90 gauge)
Rolls designed for manual application with a hand dispenser. Available in 12", 15", and 18" widths. 70 gauge for light loads, 80 gauge standard, 90 gauge for heavy or sharp-edged loads.
Machine Stretch Wrap (60-80 gauge)
Designed for semi-automatic and automatic stretch wrap machines. Thinner gauges work because machine pre-stretch (150-300%) compensates. 20" rolls are standard. Dramatically increases throughput and wrap consistency.
Pre-Stretched Film
Film that has been pre-stretched at the factory to its near-maximum elongation. Requires minimal effort to apply by hand. Clings tightly without elastic recovery. Reduces film usage by up to 40% compared to conventional hand stretch.
Colored & Tinted Stretch Wrap
Available in black (UV protection, concealment), blue, red, green, and other colors. Used for product identification, inventory management, security (opaque), and UV protection for outdoor storage.
Vented Stretch Wrap
Perforated stretch wrap that allows airflow through the wrapped load. Essential for produce, fresh foods, and any product that generates heat or requires ventilation. Available in hand and machine rolls.
VCI Stretch Wrap
Contains Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors (VCI) that protect metal parts and components from rust and corrosion during storage and transit. Eliminates the need for oils, greases, or desiccants.
Bundling Stretch Wrap (3" and 5")
Narrow rolls for bundling small groups of items together without a box. Commonly used for bundling lumber, pipes, tubes, and irregularly shaped products.
Shrink Film & Bags
Polyolefin or PVC film that shrinks tightly when heat is applied. Used for retail packaging, multipacks, and tamper-evident seals. Available in rolls (for L-sealers and tunnels) and pre-made bags.
Strapping & Banding
Strapping is used to hold, reinforce, or secure products for shipping and storage. The right strapping material depends on the load weight, tension requirements, and application method.
Polypropylene (PP) Strapping
The most economical strapping option. Lightweight, flexible, and easy to apply. Ideal for light to medium-duty applications up to about 300 lbs break strength. Available in various widths (1/4" to 5/8") and colors.
Polyester (PET) Strapping
The strongest plastic strapping material. High tensile strength (up to 1,400 lbs), excellent retained tension, and resistance to UV, moisture, and temperature changes. Ideal alternative to steel strapping for heavy loads.
Steel Strapping
The highest strength strapping material available. Used for extremely heavy loads, sharp-edged products, and applications requiring no elongation. Available in regular duty, high tensile, and stainless steel. Requires special tools for tensioning and sealing.
Composite (Cord) Strapping
Woven polyester cord strapping. Combines high strength with flexibility and safety. Does not have dangerous sharp edges like steel. Ideal for heavy lumber, bricks, concrete products, and irregularly shaped loads.
Strapping Seals and Buckles
Metal seals (open, serrated, snap-on) for PP and PET strapping. Wire buckles for cord strapping. Proper seal selection is critical -- the seal is often the weakest point in the strapping system.
Manual Strapping Tools
Hand-operated tensioners and sealers for PP, PET, and steel strapping. Available as separate tensioner + sealer combinations or combination tools. Essential for operations without automated strapping equipment.
Battery-Powered Strapping Tools
Cordless tools that tension, seal, and cut strapping in a single operation. Available for PP, PET, and steel. Significantly increase speed and consistency compared to manual tools. Options from brands like Signode, Fromm, and Orgapack.
Strapping Machines
Semi-automatic and fully automatic tabletop and arch strapping machines. Feed the product through or place it on the machine; strapping is applied, tensioned, and sealed automatically. Essential for high-volume operations.
Corner Protectors & Edge Guards
Corner protectors (also called edge guards, edge protectors, or angle boards) protect product edges and corners from damage during strapping, wrapping, and transit. They also improve load stability and distribute strapping pressure.
Cardboard Edge Protectors
Laminated paperboard L-shaped profiles. Most common and economical option. Available in various lengths (24" to 96"), thicknesses (0.12" to 0.25"), and leg widths (2" to 4"). Recyclable with other corrugated materials.
Plastic Corner Guards
Reusable plastic (HDPE or PP) corner pieces. Snap onto product edges for repeated use. More expensive initially but reusable 50+ times. Ideal for internal warehouse operations and pallet pooling.
Foam Corner Protectors
Molded or die-cut foam (PE or PU) pieces that cushion corners and edges. Used for furniture, appliances, electronics, and finished surfaces. Available in L-shape, U-channel, and custom-molded profiles.
V-Board / Angle Board
Heavy-duty laminated paperboard in V-profile, designed specifically for use under strapping. Prevents strapping from cutting into the product and distributes tension across a wider area. Critical for corrugated boxes under strap.
Strap Guards
Short sections of edge protector specifically designed to go under strapping points. Prevents strap damage to the product surface. Available in 2" to 6" lengths for targeted protection.
Full-Length Edge Protectors
Edge protectors that run the full height or width of the load. Provide continuous edge protection and significantly increase the stacking strength of palletized corrugated boxes (up to 50% improvement).
Tape & Adhesives
Packing tape is used to seal corrugated boxes for shipping and storage. The right tape depends on the box weight, storage conditions, and presentation requirements.
Hot Melt Packing Tape
The most common carton-sealing tape. Synthetic rubber adhesive provides instant, aggressive tack and excellent holding power. Works well in a wide temperature range. Available in clear, tan/brown, and custom print. 2" and 3" widths.
Acrylic Packing Tape
Water-based acrylic adhesive that provides long-term aging stability and UV resistance. Does not yellow over time like hot melt. Better performance in extreme cold. Preferred for long-term storage and archival applications.
Reinforced Gummed Tape (WAT)
Water-activated kraft tape with fiberglass reinforcement. Creates a permanent bond with corrugated board that is tamper-evident. The strongest carton-sealing tape available. Required by many carriers for heavy shipments. Provides a professional, branded appearance.
Filament Tape
Clear or translucent tape with embedded fiberglass filaments for extreme tensile strength. Used for bundling, reinforcing, palletizing, and heavy-duty sealing. Not designed for carton closure but for reinforcement.
Masking Tape
Crepe paper tape with pressure-sensitive adhesive. Clean removal without residue. Used for labeling, surface protection, paint masking, and temporary holds. Available in general purpose and high-temperature (automotive) grades.
Double-Sided Tape
Adhesive on both sides for mounting, splicing, and bonding. Available in foam (for uneven surfaces), tissue (for smooth surfaces), and film carriers. Various strength levels from repositionable to permanent.
Custom Printed Tape
Packing tape printed with your company logo, name, handling instructions, or branding message. Available in hot melt, acrylic, and gummed tape. Cost-effective branding alternative to custom-printed boxes. MOQ varies by tape type.
Tape Dispensers
Hand-held (pistol grip) dispensers for 2" and 3" tape. Multi-roll dispensers for packing stations. Water-activated tape dispensers (manual and electric). Proper dispenser selection improves packing speed and tape usage.
Cushioning & Void Fill
Cushioning and void fill materials protect products from shock, vibration, and compression during shipping. The right material depends on the product fragility, weight, and the expected shipping environment.
Bubble Wrap
Air-filled plastic sheeting that provides cushioning and surface protection. Available in small bubble (3/16") for surface protection and large bubble (1/2" and 1") for cushioning. Rolls from 12" to 48" wide. Perforated for easy tearing.
Foam Sheets & Rolls
Closed-cell polyethylene (PE) foam in sheets and rolls. Available in thicknesses from 1/32" to 2". Provides excellent surface protection and light cushioning. Used for wrapping individual items, interleaving, and lining boxes. Anti-static versions available for electronics.
Foam-in-Place
Two-part polyurethane foam that expands inside a bag placed in the box. Conforms perfectly to any product shape for custom-molded protection. Ideal for fragile, heavy, or irregularly shaped products. Eliminates the need for pre-molded foam inserts.
Packing Peanuts (Loose Fill)
Polystyrene or starch-based packing peanuts for void filling. Available in anti-static formulations for electronics. Starch-based peanuts are biodegradable and dissolve in water. Economical for large void spaces but can shift during transit.
Paper Void Fill
Crumpled kraft paper or paper pad systems. Available as fan-folded packs, roll stock, and automated paper-crumpling machines. Recyclable, biodegradable, and perceived as more environmentally friendly. Good for medium-weight products and large voids.
Air Pillows
Pre-inflated or inflate-on-demand plastic pillows for void fill. Extremely lightweight, clean, and fast to use. Available in various sizes. On-demand inflators produce continuous chains of pillows from flat film rolls, reducing storage space.
Molded Pulp
Molded from recycled paper pulp into custom shapes. Used for electronics, fragile goods, and retail-ready packaging. Fully recyclable and compostable. Increasingly replacing molded EPS (Styrofoam) for sustainability reasons.
Corrugated Pads and Inserts
Die-cut corrugated dividers, partitions, and cushioning pads. Used inside boxes to separate, cushion, and organize multiple items. Available as cell dividers (for bottles, jars), layer pads, and custom-shaped inserts.

Frequently Asked Questions
What gauge stretch wrap should I use?
For most hand-wrap applications, 80 gauge is the standard. Use 70 gauge for light loads under 1,000 lbs. Use 90 gauge for heavy loads, loads with sharp edges (like corrugated boxes), or when wrapping for outdoor storage. For machine wrap, you can use thinner gauges (60-70) because the machine pre-stretches the film 200-300%, achieving the equivalent of much thicker hand wrap. Pre-stretched film is another option that combines the ease of hand wrap with the economy of thinner film.
What is the difference between hand stretch wrap and machine stretch wrap?
Hand stretch wrap is designed for manual application using a hand dispenser. It is typically 12-18 inches wide, 70-100 gauge, and on a 3-inch core. Machine stretch wrap is designed for semi-automatic and automatic stretch wrap machines. It is typically 20 inches wide, 60-80 gauge, and on a 3-inch or 5-inch core depending on the machine. Machine wrap is thinner because the machine pre-stretches the film, effectively multiplying its thickness. Machine wrapping is 3-5 times faster than hand wrapping and produces more consistent, tighter loads.
When should I use polyester (PET) strapping instead of polypropylene (PP)?
Use PET strapping when you need high retained tension (PET does not relax like PP), higher break strength (up to 1,400 lbs vs 300 lbs for PP), UV resistance for outdoor storage, or when securing heavy loads like lumber, bricks, stone, or metal. PP strapping is more economical and perfectly adequate for light to medium loads, bundle wrapping, and general carton closure. PET is often used as a safer replacement for steel strapping on heavy loads.
What type of packing tape is best for shipping?
For most shipping applications, hot melt packing tape (2" or 3" wide) is the best choice. It offers instant tack, strong adhesion, and good performance across a wide temperature range. For cold environments (warehouses below 40F), acrylic tape performs better. For heavy shipments, high-value goods, or when tamper evidence is required, water-activated reinforced gummed tape (WAT) provides the strongest, most secure seal and is tamper-evident.
How do I choose between bubble wrap, foam, and paper void fill?
Use bubble wrap for wrapping individual items that need surface protection and light cushioning (electronics, glassware, ceramics). Use foam sheets for protecting polished, painted, or delicate surfaces from scratching. Use paper void fill for general void filling in boxes where medium-weight products need to be prevented from shifting. Use air pillows for light products where you need to fill large voids economically. For truly fragile or high-value items, consider foam-in-place for custom-molded protection.
