Buying Guide

Save 40-70% on quality-graded used packaging materials compared to buying new. Every item is inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards before it reaches our sales floor.

Buying used packaging is not just about saving money — it is an environmentally responsible choice that extends the life of materials already in circulation. Our grading system takes the guesswork out of used purchases, so you can buy with confidence knowing the exact condition of every item.

How to Evaluate Used Packaging

  • Check structural integrity — walls, corners, and base should be solid
  • Look for water damage or staining that could affect contents
  • Verify dimensions match your operational requirements
  • Assess load rating for your specific application weight
  • Consider appearance requirements (customer-facing vs. internal use)
  • Ask about prior contents (especially for food or chemical applications)

Benefits of Buying Used

  • Significant cost savings (40-70% off new)
  • Quality inspected and graded by experienced staff
  • Wide selection always in stock (10,000+ units)
  • Volume pricing available (up to 25% additional discount)
  • Environmentally responsible — extends material lifecycle

Our Grading System Explained

Every item we sell is inspected and assigned a grade so you know exactly what to expect. Our grading system is consistent, transparent, and applied uniformly across all product types.

Grade A

Grade A — Like New

Used once or twice with minimal cosmetic wear. Structurally perfect with full load capacity retained. May have minor scuffs or marks but no tears, punctures, or water damage. Ideal for customers who need near-new performance at a fraction of the cost.

Typical source: Single-use returns, overstock, surplus from clean operations

Grade B

Grade B — Good Condition

Used multiple times with visible cosmetic wear including scuffs, marks, and minor staining. Structurally sound with strong load-bearing capacity. May have small patched repairs. Great for warehousing, storage, and internal operations.

Typical source: Multi-trip returns, warehouse rotations, light industrial use

Grade C

Grade C — Fair / Economy

Significant cosmetic wear with possible patched repairs, staining, or minor structural compromises. Still functional for lighter loads and non-critical applications. Best value per dollar for businesses where appearance is not a priority.

Typical source: Heavy industrial returns, repaired units, end-of-cycle inventory

Recycling Grade

Recycling Grade

Materials beyond functional reuse but still have recycling value. We buy these at recycling rates and process them responsibly. Includes collapsed boxes, cracked totes, broken pallets, and other end-of-life packaging.

Typical source: Damaged, collapsed, or irreparable materials

Agriculture / Produce

Arizona Produce Distributor Cuts Packaging Costs by 62%

Challenge

A large produce distributor in the Phoenix area was spending over $320,000 per year on new gaylord boxes for shipping produce to retailers. Peak harvest season required surge capacity they could not always get from their supplier.

Solution

PackMesa set up a custom supply program delivering 800+ Grade A and Grade B gaylord boxes per week during peak season, with flexible volumes during off-peak. We also bought back damaged boxes for recycling, creating a closed-loop system.

Results

  • Packaging costs reduced from $320,000 to $122,000 per year (62% savings)
  • Eliminated supply shortages during peak harvest
  • Recycling buyback generated $18,000 in additional annual revenue
  • Single vendor replaced three previous suppliers
Chemical Manufacturing

Chemical Manufacturer Saves $95,000 on IBC Tote Program

Challenge

A specialty chemical manufacturer was purchasing new IBC totes at $300-350 each, using them for a single shipment, then paying to have them disposed of. They were going through roughly 400 totes per year.

Solution

PackMesa supplied reconditioned Grade A IBC totes at $90-110 each and established a buyback program for used totes after shipment. Totes in good condition were repurchased at $30-50 each and recirculated.

Results

  • Tote purchase costs reduced by 68% ($95,000 annual savings)
  • Buyback program recovered $16,000 per year
  • Disposal costs eliminated entirely
  • Environmental waste reduced by an estimated 12 tons per year
E-Commerce / Distribution

E-Commerce Fulfillment Center Builds Sustainable Packaging Program

Challenge

A growing e-commerce fulfillment center was spending heavily on new pallets and corrugate while also paying waste haulers to remove used packaging. Their sustainability report showed poor packaging reuse metrics.

Solution

PackMesa implemented a comprehensive program: supplying used pallets and gaylords for outbound shipping, buying back returns and surplus, and recycling all end-of-life materials on a weekly scheduled pickup.

Results

  • Net packaging costs reduced by 41% across all categories
  • Waste hauling costs eliminated ($28,000 annual savings)
  • Sustainability metrics improved — 89% packaging reuse/recycling rate
  • Weekly scheduled service eliminated ad-hoc ordering and disposal management

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying and selling packaging through PackMesa.

What is the difference between your grades?

We use a three-tier grading system. Grade A is like-new with minimal wear, Grade B is good condition with visible use but full structural integrity, and Grade C is economy grade with heavier wear suitable for lighter applications. Each grade is clearly defined so you know exactly what you are purchasing. We also buy materials at recycling grade for items beyond functional reuse.

Can I see samples before buying a large quantity?

Absolutely. We encourage customers to visit our Mesa facility or request sample units before committing to a large order. We can also send photos of current stock for your review. For recurring accounts, we establish grade standards at the beginning of the relationship so every delivery matches your expectations.

How do you determine the price when buying my used packaging?

Our buyback pricing is based on three factors: the type of material (gaylords, totes, pallets, etc.), the condition/grade of the material, and current market demand. Pricing is transparent and consistent — we publish our standard buyback rates and update them quarterly. Large or recurring sellers may negotiate premium rates based on volume and consistency.

Is there a minimum quantity to sell to PackMesa?

For free on-site pickup, we typically require at least one pallet load or 20+ units. Smaller quantities are welcome at our Mesa drop-off location during business hours. For very large quantities (full truckloads), we can often offer premium pricing and expedited pickup.

Do you buy damaged or contaminated packaging?

Yes, we buy damaged packaging at recycling-grade rates. Collapsed gaylords, cracked totes, broken pallets, and other end-of-life materials all have recycling value. For contaminated materials (chemical residue, hazardous substances), we evaluate on a case-by-case basis and may require additional documentation or cleaning before acceptance.

How quickly can I get packaging after ordering?

Most in-stock items are available for same-day pickup at our Mesa facility. For delivery, standard turnaround is next business day within the Phoenix metro area. Rush delivery (within hours) is available for an additional fee. Large or specialty orders may require 2-3 business days for preparation.

What payment methods do you accept?

For purchases, we accept cash, check, credit card, ACH transfer, and net terms for qualified accounts (Net 15 or Net 30 available upon credit approval). For sell-back payments, we issue checks or ACH transfers based on your preference, typically within 7 business days of material inspection.

Can I set up a recurring buy/sell arrangement?

Yes, and we encourage it. Recurring accounts receive the best pricing, priority scheduling, dedicated account management, and guaranteed inventory allocation. We can set up weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly delivery and pickup schedules tailored to your operational cadence. Many of our clients operate on standing orders that auto-adjust based on seasonal demand.
